Preserving a Rare Breed: Meet TCRBK Knabstruppers

Customer Stories: TCRBK Knabstruppers
Preserving heritage, breeding for heart — meet the passionate equestrians behind one of the rarest and most captivating horse breeds in the world.
A Rare Breed With a Rich History
TCRBK Knabstruppers is a dedicated small farm preserving and promoting one of the rarest horse breeds on Earth — the Danish Knabstrupper. With fewer than 500 horses worldwide carrying the traditional lineage, this breed traces its origins to the House of Lunn in Denmark in 1812. The foundation mare, Flabean, was purchased from a Spanish cavalry officer and bred to a palomino Frederiksborger stallion. The result? A colt with bold, colorful spotting who would define the breed’s iconic appearance and versatility.
Originally used for farm work, carriage pulling, military service, and dressage, Knabstruppers later became the dazzling circus horses of Europe. Despite multiple near-extinctions, a few passionate breeders like TCRBK have remained committed to preserving this baroque breed's old genes and original charm.

Meet the Herd
Since launching in 2022, TCRBK has grown their herd to 15 Knabstruppers with two more foals expected this year. Their mission is clear: preserve the heritage, educate the public, and share these people-loving horses with new families and future generations. Their horses exhibit not only the classic spotted coats Knabstruppers are known for, but also the intelligence, charm, and trainability that make them beloved as family horses, adult amateur mounts, and all-around companions.
They’ll soon be attending horse shows to showcase their horses’ talent and temperament — and they’re hoping to earn coverage in print publications. Given their dedication and success, we’d say they’re well on their way.

A Personal Journey Rooted in Inspiration
TCRBK’s founder first discovered the breed while reading The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren, where Pippi’s iconic spotted horse made a lasting impression. That early spark turned into a lifelong passion. Today, that love story continues with every foal born and every family introduced to the breed.
Their program is part of a growing movement to restore the original baroque Knabstrupper — not just breed taller sport horses. Their horses are registered through the KNN and are eligible for Knabstrupper divisions within registries like Westfalen.
