How Winter Coats Develop

One of the most recognizable adaptations horses display as winter approaches is the development of a thick winter coat. Triggered primarily by decreasing daylight (photoperiod) and secondarily by temperature drops, this change begins in autumn as horses shed their short, sleek summer coat and grow a longer, denser coat composed of coarse guard hairs and fine underhair. The long guard hairs protect against wind and moisture, while the underhair traps body heat by creating a layer of still air near the skin.

Winter Coat Performance in Cold and Wet Conditions

This coat is highly efficient in dry, cold conditions. A healthy horse with a full, dry winter coat can maintain thermal comfort in temperatures as low as –15°C (5°F), especially when protected from wind and precipitation. However, the coat's insulating value is significantly compromised when wet. Rain or melted snow can mat down the hairs, eliminating the insulating air layer and allowing heat to escape more readily. This is why horses kept outdoors in wet climates benefit from windbreaks, waterproof blankets, or run-in shelters.

When Additional Protection Is Needed

While the winter coat is often sufficient for thermoregulation, it does not mean all horses will thrive equally in the cold. Young, elderly, clipped, or underweight horses usually require additional protection. Still, for most healthy adults, the winter coat provides remarkable cold resilience and reduces the need for human intervention in most conditions.
